So, a Facebook friend shared a link from a 13.1 sticker hater. Have
you seen this article? https://medium.com/i-m-h-o/why-we-all-hate-your-13-1-sticker-af261799c10
Alright, so this person thinks that putting a 13.1 sticker on your car makes a
“big, arrogant butthole”; I’ll be honest, I am going to own my butthole status.
For me, the 13.1 emblazoned everything is not to brag but it’s completely for
me. It’s a reminder that there was a time when the thought of finishing any
race was laughable, a time when I didn’t think that I was capable of even
completing a feat like half marathon. Am I proud of my half marathon finishes?
Absolutely, who wouldn’t be, my feet have covered the 13.1 race distance nine
times. There’s going to be a day that my body will not let me do anything like
that anymore but the pride of knowing that I have done some pretty badass
things will last a lifetime. So, to the author of the article, the stickers
aren’t about you, shocking, I know, you’ll get over it.

You get where I'm going with this is. Then, The Anti-Jared posted this rebuttal, which I originally really liked but the more I read it the more I saw some hateful things written in there too. Now, you lucky readers get my take on the whole debacle. So, grab a beverage of your choice (mine is the teavana mint tea from Starbucks in case you were curious), and get comfortable.

I got the general message behind the original post, I really do, but I personally find that people can be a little condescending when it comes to cheering on the fat folks running or working out. It may be my own issues, but my blog, my views, and that's just how I feel about this. I know that many people are coming from a genuine place, and it's easy to differentiate the assholes from the genuinely awesome people; I'm not a total hateful ass wipe. This post felt a little back handed to me, and as a general rule, you probably shouldn't try to pretend you know what a person is thinking. When I am running, there are all kinds of things going through my head but I can assure you that my weight is one of the last things I think about. I am usually thinking about not dying, not getting swept during a race, sparkly unicorns, how I am never signing up for a race again, then minutes later, I am thinking about the next million races I want to do. The point being, that you don't get to pretend to know what I am thinking, unless you know me, then you know about the unicorns and what not. Another thing, is that you don't know my story, it's just as simple as that. I have been on a roller coaster ride with my weight for sometime and working on making a better life for myself and my family for some years.

So, the general idea that I want to get across is that I only want your encouragement because I'm AWESOME, not because I am fat. Seriously, I have done some pretty kick ass things in the last few years, and I have more incredible things to come. I sometimes have a hard time seeing all the things that I have accomplished, and again, that's my issue. Back to the point, I am not looking for a pity cheer or a pity high five, you can keep those. What I do love and try to give everyone is a genuine show of support because we are awesome and because we are doing awesome things. If you see me at a race, cheer for me because this is my ___th race, not because I am fat and bringing up the tail end. Give me a high five because you know that I am out there doing what some people think is impossible. Respect me because I have finished NINE half marathons, and countless other races, not because I am fat and doing it. Yes, I am fat, and I may always be fat, but I am pretty freaking awesome too! Go out there and be awesome too!
Let me start off by telling you that I will not be posting pictures of the Village. Let me explain, I promise I have some pretty good reasons. I have flip flopped about posting pictures of the Village but I have decided not to because if any future visitors find this blog, I would prefer that they be surprised by this incredible place, plus, I think that any pictures that I may have taken would not do the Village justice.

The Friday before the Enchanted 10K, we had our volunteer opportunity and team dinner at Give Kids The World. GKTW had a bus pick up the crew who wanted to volunteer before the dinner, and for the majority of us, it would be the first time we would be meeting after months of conversing online. It was interesting to hear everyone's story and why they chose to run for GKTW, some were GKTW alumni, some knew someone or had a family member who had visited GKTW, others wanted to raise money for a wonderful charity while having the ability to run as well, there were even two teenage girls who were running their first half marathon and wanted to raise money while they were at it. Quick side note, I wish I had started at their age before my body started revolting every time I do something quasi active.

As soon as I stepped off the bus, I knew the place was something very special and I wish I had the words to adequately describe it. It's not just the aesthetics of the Village, it's the people, the atmosphere at GKTW that is magical, and it's easy to see that incredible things are happening there.

We were put to work at the Village, helping to stuff pillows that are given to the Wish kids as part of a little ceremony. I don't mean to brag but my group totally killed it with the pillow stuffing, our pillows are extra magical. While there, the team got to know each other a little better, shared some stories and some laughs. One of the employees at GKTW showed us some LARGE binders they have made of the thank you letters that the children and families have written to the Gift Fairy, who leaves gifts daily, not just for the Wish child but for their siblings too. It may have made me well up just a little.

From our volunteering, we moved on to our team dinner where we were welcomed by Mayor Clayton and Ms. Merry. The dinner was followed by the awards, an event that was moving; the team consisted of some pretty incredible people. One of our team members (a GKTW alum family member) was actually on both of the inaugural Run GKTW teams, he originally raised $6000 for the Marathon weekend in January, then he proceeded to raise another $3000 in the span of 8 days, so he could be a part of the Princess weekend. It was hard not to be inspired by not just my fellow team mates but the atmosphere on the Avenue of Angels before the Pirates and Princess party. Before we were sent off on our tour of the Village, we had to partake in a tradition of dancing the "Cupid Shuffle", it's hard not to smile when you're doing the "Cupid Shuffle"....true story.

The parts of the Village which we were fortunate enough to see, were incredible. When I tell you that this place is magic, I promise you that I am not exaggerating. Just about anything a kid would want to do is available to them, think fishing, mini golf, a little arcade, playground and the list goes on.

Lots of tears were shed, before during and after the visit, and it was great to experience what makes Give Kids The World such a special place, and such a great charity to fundraise for.
Five weeks ago, I started a challenge at Crossfit called "The Game". This was a points based game where you would earn points for eating 100% paleo everyday, exercising at least 10 minutes a day, drinking half of your body weight in ounces everyday, doing at least 10 minutes of mobility a day, sleeping at least seven hours a night, taking fish oil supplements daily, and finally communicating with your team and one opponent per day. So, if you have been reading my ramblings for a long time, you might remember that I love these types of competitions. The only difference is that this time, I made a very concerted effort to not go to crazy town, I don't mean to toot my own horn but for those of you have seen me do these competitions know that this is HUGE. I did NOT become the Mayor of Crazy Town!!! As much as I love getting insanely competitive, the side of me that comes out is not a pretty one and not one that I want my family to deal with again.

Now about "The Game", it started with a baseline WOD was a 15 minute AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) which consisted of a 200m run, 10 burpees, 20 ab mat sit ups and 30 squats. The day of the baseline I got 2 rounds, and 27 reps (the run does not count towards the rep count). It wasn't great but it was a starting point, and we all have to start somewhere. I love AMRAP workouts because I am guaranteed to not be the last person finished, a huge feat in my world.

We then had to eat 100% paleo for 5 weeks, accruing fines and losing points for any infractions. What this means no grains, sugar, dairy, legumes and no happiness. The first few days of the challenge were tough, I am sure that the headaches and discomfort I felt were unreal; detoxing from sugar and junk was a LOT harder than I thought it would be. Needless to say, for the first week or so, I was a ray of freaking sunshine, and a total joy to be around. I also may or may not have cried when I drank my first cup of black coffee, I'm telling you the detoxing was ROUGH. I obviously survived, so it wasn't all gloom and doom, and as soon as I started feeling better, the plan was a lot easier to get through. I'll be honest, it was tough at first because it required more planning than I cared for but after a while, it became part of daily life. Things like going out to lunch with friends have required a little more planning but it has all been fairly workable. The biggest obstacle was planning for the trip to Disney for the Princess Half Marathon weekend, but even that was workable. I only went off plan a few times, and even then it wasn't all awful. Plus, darn it if I didn't feel great after the initial crappy sugar detox. I think that feeling as well as I did was a surprise because I was sort of hoping that I wouldn't feel as well as I have been and that I could just write off the paleo lifestyle. Damn it paleo, you proved me wrong!

So, the challenge is now over and my team didn't win, but it's not the end of the world, although I sulked like a baby on Friday night. I didn't go to Crazy Town during the challenge but I still suck at losing and to be honest I was disappointed in myself a little for not having done better overall. I will say that when we did "The Game" WOD, I did manage to get a complete 3 rounds and finished on the run portion, and that is less than a week after the 19.3 mile Glass Slipper Challenge. After the WOD, I had promised to take Bella to eat pizza, because she's had to eat paleo-ish through out this challenge. I'll be honest, because my team lost and I was being a whiney baby, I ate way more pizza than necessary on Friday night, and it made me feel like crap. That crappy feeling did not stop me from eating crap on Saturday too, and now, I am feeling like garbage. It's like a hangover without the alcohol consumption, this is NO FUN at all. I guess there is something to this paleo lifestyle, and I'll be sticking with it because I like the way I feel on it. The only thing I need to work on now, is keeping my portions under control, because sadly, you cannot eat all the things all of the time. DARN YOU PALEO!!!Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06608105190280518348noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5785054866318608168.post-77082063978155246462014-02-17T00:42:00.001-05:002014-02-17T00:42:26.907-05:00It's The Final Countdown!

Nothing says it quite as poignantly as the hit "The Final Countdown", it is less than a week until I go to Disney World and complete the Glass Slipper Challenge. I am so excited, I can hardly stand it, but I am also a little nervous but I am usually a little nervous before my half marathons. I know I will finish and be fine, but I can't help but be just a little nervous, 19.3 miles over two days is nothing to scoff at. More importantly, I want to make sure that I make the rest of the Give Kids The World team (aka- The Dots) proud. Now to drink another glass of water and get to bed, the only problem is that this is kind of how I am feeling....
If somehow you happened to miss that I was doing some fundraising, I have been raising money for Give Kids The World. They are a wish-fulfilling retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. The children and their families are treated a weeklong, fantasy vacations in Central Florida, complete with accommodations in the Village's whimsical villas, transportation, attraction tickets, meals and much more, all of this is at no cost to the families. It allows the families to spend precious time together, and the children a chance to smile, laugh and forget about doctors and hospitals.

I am running the Glass Slipper challenge at the Disney Princess Half Marathon for Give Kids The World. My goal was to raise $3000 for this incredible organization so that they can keep fulfilling the wishes of these deserving children and their families. When I signed up, I did it because a friend and fellow blogger stayed at the village during her daughter's Wish trip. I also was fortunate enough to meet the incredible Bartlinski family on my last visit to Disney World, who shared the story of their beautiful angel Teresa and whom had stayed at the Village for Teresa's Wish trip. I wanted to help Give Kids The World fulfill the wishes of more deserving children. Little did I know that fundraising would teach me a whole lot more.

Things I learned while fundraising (in bullet points because I like those things)

Let's start with the obvious, fundraising is HARD WORK. I knew it would be difficult but had no idea just how much would go into raising every single dollar.

I learned a lot about Give Kids The World, their history, their work and about some of the families who have stayed at GKTW.

I will definitely be taking the family to volunteer on future visits to Disney World.

Running is often a selfish endeavor, and running for Give Kids The World really does make the miles mean a whole lot more.

It served as a reminder that everyone you meet has a story and some are carrying worries, pains and sadness you may never know about.

It also served as a reminder that the world does not revolve around me and my problems.

Not every fundraiser is going to pan out the way you planned, case in point, my gift wrapping fundraiser. I sat at Books-A-Million for hours and only raised $14, it was disappointing and heart breaking.

Not every person you know will donate to your cause, I know this seems obvious but somehow this one surprised me.

To expand on the previous point, not everyone you know will care or understand about the charity you are fundraising for. Again, seems obvious but it too surprised me, I guess I am really naive.

All that said, some people will really surprise you in both good and bad ways. People who you would never in a million years expect to help you out, and people who you were sure would help, simply don't.

I learned about putting myself out there, asking for help with fundraising was definitely out of my comfort zone.

If you choose to fundraise, it's important to make it known. Get ready to share your story with everyone, even the lady in front of you in line at the checkout.

I wasn't even kidding about the checkout lady, I really did tell a lady at the supermarket.

Most importantly, I learned about the impact that Give Kids The World has on the children and families who stay there. An impact goes beyond the week they spend at the Village. Check out the story GMA did on Give Kids The World, and watch the videos (don't forget your tissues in case you are allergic to feelings like I am). GMA Give Kids The World Story.

It made sense to go and "run it out", it doesn't always make everything better but it usually helps. Today, NOT SO MUCH! The more I ran, the angrier I got. I was angry at the people who disappointed me, I was angry at myself for being hung up on it, and a little angry that my knee was giving me a little trouble (I hurt it on Monday being less than graceful at CrossFit). This pretty much sums up how I felt after the run....
Don't worry, it's not all gloom and doom. I did have an incredible time teaching my Zumba class tonight, and I finally got my endorphin fix. I managed to "dance it out", thank goodness!

By the way, tomorrow I'll post about my newest adventures into Crazy Town! I missed that place, and it missed me.Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06608105190280518348noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5785054866318608168.post-23956283127335128572014-01-08T23:50:00.000-05:002014-01-08T23:50:30.260-05:00Progress Not PerfectionI get frustrated easily if you haven't already figured it out by reading my musings. I've been running and training for the Glass Slipper Challenge, and I have seen some improvements in my running, endurance, and speed, but not what I had hoped for. To be honest, my expectations were unrealistic and those expectations sometimes kept me from really seeing the improvements that I have made. What this leads me to is the fact that I have made some improvements in CrossFit and I have sort of failed to see some of them. When I started at CrossFit PTC, I did a baseline workout, which at the time kicked my behind. This workout is revisited every few months to gauge improvements, today, we did it again. It's a testament to what's important is progress not perfection.

Here is the workout
Row 500m
40 Squats
30 Sit ups
20 Push ups
10 Pull ups

My original baseline - 9/10/13
Row 300
20 squats to a 19 inch box with a weight plate stacked on top
15 sit ups
10 push ups (banded but band color not recorded)
5 ring rows in lieu of pull ups
time: 7:35

Second time doing the baseline workout - 10/21/13
Row 500
40 squats to a 10 inch box with 2 large weight plates stacked on top
30 sit ups
20 push ups (banded, with a green band)
10 ring rows in lieu of pull ups
time: 8:40

Third time doing the baseline workout - TODAY 1/8/14
Row 500
40 squats
30 sit ups
20 push ups (banded, with a blue band)
10 ring rows in lieu of pull ups
time: 6:55
Look at me taking baby steps towards being more awesome! Ok, brag over....

Since 2013 was an interesting year to say the least, I have decided to dub 2014 "The Year Of Adventure" (I think this year might need it's own logo). I have some pretty awesome adventures already in the works, and some are still in the early idea stages. The biggest adventure of 2014 is going to be the family's cross-country move to Sacramento, California. To make a long story short, Patrick's got a job out there with his company, he moved out there two days after Christmas. B and I will be making the cross-country trek at the end of June/beginning of July. Being the nerds that we are, we are already planning our very first trip to Disneyland for B's birthday in August, it was actually the first thing we started to talk about after we found out the move was going to happen. Also, I am hoping to get in for the Disneyland half and finally get my Coast To Coast medal. In February, I am hoping to run the Glass Slipper Challenge while raising money for Give Kids The World, as of right now the situation is not looking that great but I am confident I can make it work in the next few weeks. I'm also working on kick more behind at Crossfit, I really do love lifting big weights, it makes me feel like a total bad ass. As for B, she'll be playing lacrosse again and I will be trying very hard not to be the crazy sports parent. There'll be more adventure and I am sure I will <strike>bore</strike> entertain you all with our adventures.

Today's adventure- trying not to freeze to death while visiting my family in Toronto. The weather app was kind enough to tell me that it was -8 F and felt like -24 F (-22C, -31C). I have turned into an absolute cold weather wimp after spending nearly ten years living in Georgia. I wanted to run outside during this visit but it's not going to happen, I'm not that darn crazy.

Here's my shameless plug, if you have it within your budget to donate, I would appreciate it immensely. http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/lucymccullough/disneyprincessweekend2014Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06608105190280518348noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5785054866318608168.post-36340838781733530222013-11-17T08:05:00.000-05:002013-11-17T08:05:24.683-05:00Run Disney Atlanta Meet Up (aka- The Running Of The Disney Nerds) *LONG and Photo Heavy*Yesterday morning was THE morning! I woke up at 4:45 and I only wake up that early when absolutely necessary, but for runDisney, I woke up without any complaints. I had been looking forward to this meet up since I found out that I was selected. When I got to Turner field and pulled into the lot and was greeted by all the other runDisney nerds, I was with my people. We headed into the stadium to check in, get our shirts, take an excessive amount of pictures and got ready to run. It was really foggy Saturday morning, so I wasn't exactly sure if I'd be able to get many pictures until the sun came up. You can see for yourself.
I even made some new friends while I was waiting in line for my shirt, check in, and also while I was waiting for everything to get going. It's always great to meet some fellow Disney lovers to geek out with, one of the ladies was telling me all about her upcoming trip. I'm not even going to lie to you, I was so jealous listening to her plans. I really want to make a weekend trip to Disney World before Christmas, I'll explain why in a different post. Anyways, after a while of waiting in the cold and chatting, the festivities got underway.
We were split into two groups for the run. The first group would run straight through, and the second group would run 20/20 intervals with Jeff Galloway. Also part of the Galloway group but not pictured here was Olympian Barbara Parker. I obviously went into the Galloway group with what seemed to be a large part of the group. We got our directions from Jeff, and then waited for the all clear to get started.
The course was a simple two mile run, from Turner Field to the Capitol building, around it and back. I knew that I would be bringing up the back because I always do, but I tried to keep the group in my sights for as long as possible. I even toyed with the idea of cutting the course short and coming back early, I DID NOT and I am really glad that I made that decision. To be perfectly honest, I was worried that I would miss something on the course if I turned around. As I reached the Capitol, the Galloway group was finishing their run around the building and heading back. I waddled along at a pace that was quasi-decent for the first mile, but that second mile, oh heavens. That second mile was magic, but I expected nothing less because this was a runDisney run after all. I managed to eek out that second mile faster than any mile I have run in years! I had a 2 mile PR earlier in the week at Crossfit, but this mile was even faster. Ok, faster for me, which may not be much to some but it is HUGE for me. I even got high fives from the lovely Atlanta Police Officers manning the course! Being last isn't always a bad thing, and this time it was definitely not a bad thing. When I got back to Turner Field, I was directed to a ramp that lead to field level. I was so excited because I really do love the Braves, and getting a chance to run on the warning track, was so cool. But wait, there's more! None other than Minnie Mouse was waiting for us. I waited in line for my photo op and took the opportunity to get some from the field.
When I got back, we were served breakfast. The whole sugar detox thing I've been doing this week went out the window because they had my favorite pineapple chobani yogurt. I tried to take the tiny side track and keep the rest of the day on track but I failed. That's ok though, because it's back to it today.

2. Tammy Jenkins from runDisney, who announced the new hashtag #whyirundisney. You can share your story in a 15 second video on instagram using the hashtag #whyirundisney. You might be chosen to have your reason and a follow up featured via runDisney. I am trying to come up with a great way to share my story within the 15 second time frame.
3. Then it was time to hear from none other than local Jeff Galloway, he really is such a nice guy. He gave away some swag and debuted his trail running book.

4. Next up was Tara Gidus, The Diet Diva. She had some great pre and post run nutrition advice, you can find her articles for runDisney here. When I spoke with her afterwards, she told me that she has a new book out called Flat Belly Cookbook For Dummies.

5. Ali from New Balance, who announced that they will have more shoes available. It seems that they were not really ready for the huge response the shoes generated. They did present the second teaser video https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=1432093300338235. The 2014 shoes will have Sorcerer Mickey for the men and will be pink with Minnie. Also, in 2014 they will be offering the shoes in children's sizes as well. Barbara Parker also spoke but I don't know why I don't have pictures. She shocked the audience when she told us that she has never been to Disney World. The entire audience gasped, and it was pretty funny. Her poor husband was pretty much told that he has to take her to Disney World.
All in all it was a great event, and I feel so honored to have been a part of it. Now, I couldn't leave without getting a picture with Minnie and Mickey because that would just be very un-Disney. While we waited in line runLinzey had the group in line do her famous jazz hands picture.

They then posted this tweet.

I sent my email RSVP, and then the freak out attack started. I was going a little bit crazy waiting to hear whether or not I got in.

Then, runDisney posted this.

Then I really went crazy, seriously, cuckoo pants. So much so, that I just had to head out for my run to try to get my mind off this Disney induced insanity. First of all, I ran my fastest mile that I've been able to eek out in a long time (like over a year), even though I was running on the heinous hills behind my apartments. Secondly, I wore my awesome My Race Ragz tee, can we talk about how awesome this shirt is?! Anyways, the brain was working overtime during this run. Here's what I realized

Pandora and I have a love/hate relationship. The last few runs, I've been listening to Pandora and it's really like playing musical roulette. During one run, I played the No Doubt station and it played No Doubt but then started playing some of the most depressing music from my high school and college (the first time) days. Then yesterday, the music was all perfect, seriously, every single song was perfect.

Wearing the wrong pants makes it so I clap for myself during the run...horrifying. I was thinking about the running clinic I attended last week where I was wearing the WRONG pants and panties, and as we were doing the drills my fatty bits and pieces were clapping. I even turned around during the group run because of the clapping, I was mortified.

My eating needs some cleaning up so that I don't clap for myself anymore while I run. The good thing is that I made an appointment with one of my crossfit coaches to chat about nutrition.

I have an unhealthy obsession with chocolate because all I wanted to eat all day Tuesday was CHOCOLATE!

I was thinking about my fundraising efforts and I decided that fundraising is tough but so worthwhile. There are days when the goal feels overwhelming, and I wonder how I am going to make it work. I only have until January 31st to raise the funds.

My brain sure is a busy place.

After the run, I still hadn't heard back about the runDisney meet up. It wasn't until sometime around 5 that runDisney finally posted the list. http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/rundisney-atlanta-meet-up-attendees/

There it was, MY NAME! I was thrilled, heck, I'm still thrilled. I can't wait! I felt a little like this...

Shiny things are distracting, plus, there are all sorts of other distracting distractions. This first month of crossfit was interesting, challenging, frustrating, and dare I say...fun. Fun? Yeah, it's not always fun but there have been fun moments. For example, I sort of love the olympic weight lifting stuff, mainly because it makes me feel like a bad ass, and you know how I love feeling like a bad ass. There's a WOD called Lynne which involves bench presses and pull ups, now I didn't go heavy on this and my pull ups are not pull ups but actually ring rows; but I totally loved this one. The coach even told me that next time I needed a heavier barbell because the weight I picked was too light. That particular WOD was made for me, they should rename it the Lucy.

(By the way, I love Gravity Falls. There, I said it)

It has been challenging, there have been some days that have been humbling, because even with my scaling (modifications), keeping up was a struggle. There have been some days when it's so frustrating and I have asked myself mid-workout why exactly I am stupid/crazy enough to be doing this. OK, there have been lots of days when I question my sanity, but as we all know, I am the mayor of Crazy Town, so it's all good. I will say that I can already see improvements in my fitness, the only issue now is improving my nutrition. For the next month, I'm going to pick one or two weekly nutrition goals per week to focus on. It's time to suck less and be more awesome.
Why? Just because I feel like it.

I love/hate crossfit. I feel like I am getting much stronger and fitter, which is always a good thing and sort of the goal of going in the first place; plus, the lifting stuff is pretty bad ass (you know how I feel about all things bad ass). The hate part comes from feeling like I am always lagging behind in class.

I saw this picture from Monday's WOD.... talk about bad.... right there is some in your face motivation. How did I let myself get back to looking like this?! A beer gut is not cute, but beer is so good...oh the dilemma!

Look at my pink shoes.... pink is pretty much my favorite. I heard that wearing pink and/or bright colors makes you at least 75% more awesome. There might be some sort of scientific study about that, and if there isn't there should be.

Taught Zumba with a friend of mine yesterday, it was so much fun but so nerve wracking. She says she loves my class but it still makes me so nervous. It might be a little childish but I worry that my ladies like her more than they like me. It doesn't help that when we walked in, they freaked out and told my friend that they were worried that now they'd have their butts kicked. What does that mean? Do I suck? (yup, crazy town)

On to school news, taking exclusively online classes this semester sucks monkey nuts, I need to be in a classroom.

Still debating over whether or not I should enter the honors program. What would you do?

The bracelet is a wrap bracelet with an oval pendant that reads "go hard...no excuses". I LOVE this bracelet, not only is it an awesome message, but the bracelet is pretty rockin' fine. Beyond physical motivation, it actually was a motivation for school, sounds weird but it helped. I still wear the bracelet for every exam and test, because sometimes, I just need a little motivation to keep working hard. Now that I am crossfitting, I wear it everyday to remind me that it's time to "go hard..no excuses". Check out the awesome bracelet...
Alright, so if you've been reading lately, you'll know that I am running the Glass Slipper Challenge at the Disney Princess Half Marathon weekend. I'm running the challenge as a member of the Give Kids The World Team. Give Kids The World exists solely to fulfill the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. These deserving families are treated to weeklong fantasy vacations to Central Florida where accommodations, attraction tickets, entertainment, meals and more are all provided at no cost. Being part of the GKTW team also means that I have some fundraising to do. This is where you come in, and it's super easy to help out, for the month of October I am raffling off some pretty awesome stuff. So, all you have to do is go to http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/LucyMcCullough/disneyprincessweekend2014 and make a donation. <strike>You receive one entry for every $5 you donate.</strike> After you've made your donation, just click here and fill in your information, it's just that easy. You sounded like such a good idea last night, the whole family was excited to see you. I'm not gonna lie, you were perfectly cheesy, your toppings were just right and thoroughly delicious. It was like Pizza Leonardo Da Vinci himself had created you. Each bite was glorious and at the time I thought you were worth it. Then this morning rolled around and you showed me a very ugly side of you, it was awful. My stomach was protesting but what's worse is that you have left me feeling so sluggish. I went for a walk this morning and I felt awful the entire time. I'm still feeling sluggish and tired. Why would you do this to me? I'm so hurt! In going to curl up in a corner and try to forget you.

Lucy (aka-Slug McGlug)
Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06608105190280518348noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5785054866318608168.post-81971967298439213082013-09-27T07:01:00.001-04:002013-09-27T08:01:18.699-04:00Lions and Tigers and Crossfit, Oh My!

So, I don't remember if I mentioned here that I started Crossfit earlier this month. Anyways, this week has been pretty kick ass in terms of working out, I've gotten my runs in, I've been working my hardest in Crossfit, although all of the workouts have to be scaled (aka modified) for me. I've been a little scared each workout, but I think that's because I'm pushing myself out of my comfort zone. Today, that's another story, today's workout has me terrified. To make it worse, I'm still pretty sore from Wednesday's workout, I know it's a good thing but it's killing the motivation this morning. I usually go in the afternoon, at the same time as B goes to Crossfit Kids, but today she's got a friend coming over, so I kind of have a lame excuse. This pretty much sums up how I feel about going to Crossfit today.

I know, it's been forever since I have posted about her. OK, it may have also been a while since I have blogged with any sort of regularity. Anyways, she and I ran/walked/waddled (well, I did the waddling), and it was like old times. The only exception was the part where our pace was miserably slow, so slow in fact that I would call it turtles stomping through peanut butter. I can't remember where I read that saying but I feel that it accurately describes the pace this morning. The best part was getting the miles in, and getting it done. We were able to go on about our days after our all too early wake up calls. I've missed our crazy chats.

Ok, so did I tell you that I started a Facebook page for the blog, you can go give it a like over here.....
Well, it's happening right now.

Most of the summer was spent in school and chauffeuring B around from camp to camp. There were bouts of running and half assed attempts at being awesome. Then to make things worse, I was feeling very uninspired with my Zumba classes too. Part of the problem is that I did not take the time to plan properly and make time for all the things. I'll be honest, summer classes were tough but I could have made it all work a bit better, the lack of planning made me feel like I was barely keeping my head above water. The good thing is that I have a good idea as to what next summer's classes will look like so I can plan and prepare accordingly. On a good note, I did manage to get straight A's and oh yeah, did I mention that I made the Dean's List in the Spring/Winter semester?! What a difference being an adult and paying for school yourself will make. Then to add to it, we had some testing done for B and found out that she's extremely intelligent, I mean crazy smart y'all, but she is also dyslexic (which is not as cut and dry as one would think), she has dysgraphia (a writing related learning disorder) and ADHD (totally different in girls than boys). It was a lot to process, and something that was a bit difficult to talk to her about. She cried and was pretty upset at first but we explained it to her, let her read about it on the Yale Center For Creativity and Dyslexia site, and she felt much better after reading that. Then she saw some of the documentary called The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia, she loved seeing some intelligent and successful people who also have similar diagnoses.

Ok, don't worry, it's not all doom and gloom. I did get to go to Disney World with the fam. Check us out...

The trip was pretty epic, B and Patrick have a way of making some pretty awesome things happen. Like seating right by the window when we had dinner in the castle so we could watch Wishes (the fireworks show) right from our table on B's birthday; it was MAGICAL. B had some issues with her car design when we went on Test Track, and when she told a cast member about it, the cast member took us in the back way, gave us as much time as we needed to design the car then we got to bypass the line to get back on the ride. There were some other cool things but I won't bore you guys with it. If you need to go to Disney, Patrick and B are the people to go with if you want to have some cool and magical stuff happen.

On the Disney trip, something pretty magical happened to me. I met a family at Downtown Disney that touched my heart and inspired me to do something worthwhile. I met a family who had recently lost one of their adopted daughter to a heart condition, and they were at Disney celebrating the life of their beloved daughter. They handed my husband and I a scroll, tied up with a pretty little ribbon and a tiny tiara attached to it. Patrick and I sat down to read their daughter's story and we were both moved to tears, I am tearing up just thinking about this family. When we got back, I read the families' blog and I read about their volunteer experience during their recent visit to Disney and their stay at Give Kids The World Village on their daughter's Make-A-Wish trip. This was the second time I had heard about this wonderful organization, and I started to have a nagging feeling that I had to do something for this organization.

Imagine my surprise and excitement when I found out that Give Kids The World has started a running team to raise funds, the teams will be running in the Disney Marathon Weekend and at the Disney Princess Half Marathon weekend. So, I joined the team, and I will be running the Glass Slipper Challenge at the Princess Half Marathon weekend for Team Give Kids The World. So, here we go again, I'm getting ready for another half and running for an important cause. If you have it within your budget to donate, I would greatly appreciate it. I am also working on a virtual race with some pretty awesome prizes, so stay tuned. http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/LucyMcCullough/disneyprincessweekend2014
B and I met the MRTT ladies for a kids and moms run in honor of the day. After the obligatory pictures of the group we were off, B made friends with one of the other kids and they were off. I waddled behind doing my intervals but it just felt so fantastic to be out there with a group and have a few people to actually run with. Maybe it was the group, and the camaraderie, or maybe because I came back from my recent trip to Toronto with a new found motivation, whatever it was, it was awesome to run/waddle. IT WAS SO MUCH FUN! It's going to be a weekly thing, at least over the summer, every Wednesday night we'll be meeting up for a group run with the kiddos, so there are no excuses for not getting it done.

Alright, so Toronto.... it was great to see my family and a friend who I hadn't seen in a LONG time but it was an awful trip at the same time, I'll explain in just a second. You know sometimes life is sending you all kinds of signs to get your sh*t together, and you only half listen/pay attention, so you get another sign, and yet you still don't listen so then life gives you a swift kick in the ass in the hopes that you finally freaking get it together. I've written about all of these signs before, all year in fact, if you go back and look at all of my posts this year, you can see them all. It's been sign after sign but being stupid and lazy is much easier than getting my mess together, so I sort of pretended to get it all together, and sometimes made some half assed efforts to get it together. See, half assing it was not going to cut it, and life wanted to make sure that I knew it. So, here's the story... B and I were heading to Toronto to see my family for a week when it happened. The airline had us seated apart from one another, which wouldn't be an issue if she wasn't only eight years old. Long story short, we managed to get seats together right before we boarded the plane, again, normally not a problem, except I needed a seat where the middle armrest can be raised to accommodate my ample behind and we did not get those seats. So, I had to sit in an awkward, sideways, really embarrassing and uncomfortable position. Of course, this did not go unnoticed, the flight attendant came over and made a HUGE scene, and all I wanted to do at that particular moment was to crawl in a hole and hide from the staring eyes. I talked to the flight attendant and we were on our way. I escorted B to the restroom during the flight and as I walked by two passengers started talking about me, and the whole seat thing. I proceeded to tell them that I could hear them, and that perhaps they should speak in quieter voices or mind their own business. I WAS MORTIFIED! The thing is, that this wasn't enough, my bag never made it to Toronto, so I had to go buy some clothes so that I'd have something while I waited for the airline to get my bags to me. Going clothes shopping was the final nail in the coffin, I am so unhappy with what I have done to my body...completely unacceptable. The whole thing just SUCKED, I mean really and truly sucked! What's worse, the reason for the trip was to get away for a little while and have a little break from the insanity that was May (that's for another blog post). So life's finally managed to tell me that that there's been enough bullsh*t and messing around, it's time to get really and truly serious about my health.Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06608105190280518348noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5785054866318608168.post-5936309803411323002013-05-03T00:21:00.002-04:002013-05-03T00:21:47.231-04:00LAX Mom...because I enjoy being Captain Crazy Pants!

So, in case you missed it, B is playing lacrosse and it has sort of taken over our life but in a good way. I even manage to squeeze in some miles during practice. Who knew that B would finally find a sport where she would dominate and kick some serious behind?! This upcoming weekend is the culmination of the spring season, she has a tournament and it's her first time experiencing tournament play. I know she'll be fine but someone is going to have to have some sedatives for me, I have some special mom moments when her team is playing. The only thing that tempers the crazy is having the camera in my hand. Saw this and thought it was appropriate....

First things first, I want to let you all know that I am ok and I am not dying, I have seen a doctor and have been checked out. On Saturday, I thought I was dying or at least having a heart attack. Yes, you read that right, I thought that I was having a heart attack. Let me break it down for you, I had my finals last week, and had been wound pretty tight all week, and it really wore me down physically. I thought that come Friday after the exams were finished that I could finally breath a sigh of relief and relax for a bit before my May and summer classes start. Saturday morning B had an away lacrosse game and we were running a bit behind schedule and had some hiccups that morning, then on the way, there was an accident on the road and the road was blocked for a bit as tow truck was taking one of the cars off the road. This irrationally brought me to tears, I just couldn't bare being late and I think that the stress building up in the days leading up all just came to a head on Saturday. On the road, I started feeling feeling a tightness in my chest that was very alarming, then I started freaking out and I thought I was having a heart attack or something. We got to the lacrosse fields and I calmed down and started feeling better, but needless to say the feeling gave me a HORRIBLE FRIGHT. When we got home, I took and aspirin and started doing some research. Dr. Google and I aren't friends, because all it did was scare me and ramp me up all over again. I didn't have the same feeling but my mind was racing. Come Sunday, I was feeling fine but of course this is still lingering in my head. When I went to the grocery store I once again freaked myself out, and I am not even sure what triggered the feeling.

First thing Monday morning, I was on the phone with my doctor's office making an appointment. I saw my doctor and told her what happened. She examined me and told me that I wasn't having a heart attack, and that what I was experiencing was a panic attack and some complications of my asthma brought on by it. She did recommend a heart scan thing if I was really that worried about my heart, which I agreed to and scheduled, but she said she thinks it will be more to put my mind at ease. It's not covered by insurance but I am going to pay for it just so I can have the peace of mind. So, I'm not dying, but my asthma is really bothering so I am on a new inhaler and another treatment. I am also now to keep track of any times when I have these panicky feelings.

I also went to Weight Watchers yesterday, and was down 2.5 after an abysmal showing the few weeks in that I didn't go to meetings and generally wasn't being more awesome. More importantly and embarrassingly, the meeting yesterday brought me to tears. I am not sure what exactly it was about the meeting, but I was a mess. I was welling up in the meeting, then had a good cry in the car afterwards. I guess that I feel a renewed sense of purpose and a renewed motivation to be more awesome and less fat and unhealthy.

Holy smokes that was a lot to type, I am not even going to proofread it so I apologize to the grammar police.Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06608105190280518348noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5785054866318608168.post-76992217651072097132013-04-17T08:29:00.000-04:002013-04-17T08:29:00.256-04:00Running For Boston

Yesterday morning, I ran with another member of my local Moms Run This Town chapter. We ran in honor of the victims of the horrendous events that occurred at the Boston Marathon on Monday. I put aside my anxieties about running with other people and put aside my anxieties about my pace and focused on honoring those affected by the tragic events. It wasn't about me, it wasn't about yesterday morning's running partner, it was about honoring, remembering and not letting the evil, mean hearted, person or people responsible win. There not much else to say other than my thoughts and prayers are with Boston and those affected.Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06608105190280518348noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5785054866318608168.post-34886448801933213092013-04-11T10:05:00.000-04:002013-04-11T10:05:24.734-04:00The Color Run Race Report 3/6/13 (A photo report)First and foremost, there was no racing in this one. It was purely for very colorful fun with B and my mom, yup, my mom was visiting and joined in for the fun. We got to Atlanta Motor Speedway, we were ready to go, we even snuck into an earlier wave so we could get going. I know, I know, don't judge.
We got going, but there would be no running, we would have been killing ourselves zig zagging because of the shear number of people but this one was about having fun and not killing ourselves. I was surprised at how non irritating the color powder was, I guess I was expecting something a little more harsh. The other thing was that some of the color throwers were awesome, they weren't shy about dousing you with the stuff, others you had to practically beg to have them throw it at you. We wanted finish as dirty and colorful as possible.

We waited around to be part of one of the color throws that happened every 15 minutes, and B decided to throw her packet of blue right in my face, I looked like a smurf. It was all just so much fun! We'll be doing it again in September and B has now told me that she wants to do the Electric Run too.
